Google CEO: AI is still far from improving itself, but already helps build new models
Google CEO Sundar Pichai says AI is still a long way from fully improving itself on its own, a stage known as recursive self-improvement. Google researchers have started using AI agents to help build models, but the technology is still in its early stages.
Google co-founder Sergey Brin said earlier that the Flash models and Gemini 4 already show AI taking part in its own development. Researchers are now working with AI models to build the next generation, and Pichai expects more progress next year.
Google said in April that 75% of its new code was AI-generated, but Pichai believes that number no longer tells the full story, since AI now shapes every piece of code. He also noted that software rollbacks caused by bugs have dropped by one third, with AI tools improving both speed and code quality.
