Google Co-founder Brin Urges DeepMind to Speed Up Gemini Development, Leadership Reshuffle Draws Attention
According to Reuters, Google co-founder Sergey Brin has been urging key AI staff to focus on Gemini model development in recent months to close the gap with competitors. In April, Brin called on Google DeepMind to speed up at an all-hands meeting, after Anthropic released a preview of its powerful Claude model.
Gemini briefly led last November, but updates from Anthropic and OpenAI have put it behind. Internal tests show the new flagship Gemini still lags in areas like coding, so Google delayed its release by two months. On August 5, DeepMind underwent a leadership reshuffle: former CEO Demis Hassabis became chairman, and his deputy Koray Kavukcuoglu took over as CEO.
Alphabet announced on August 6 that some teams would leave DeepMind and join Google, further reducing DeepMind's autonomy. Analysts say these changes are tied to Google's push for AI dominance. Kavukcuoglu, who is more commercially focused, has become the main contact between DeepMind and Google Cloud. Google declined to comment on related questions.
