Google DeepMind Forms Elite Team to Boost Gemini's Programming Capabilities, Catching Up with Anthropic
Technology media The Information reports that Google DeepMind has formed an elite team to enhance Gemini's programming capabilities in order to catch up with Anthropic in the AI programming race. Led by Sebastian Borgeaud, an engineer who previously worked on Gemini's pre-training, the team focuses on tackling complex long-cycle programming challenges like writing software from scratch.
Google co-founder Sergey Brin and DeepMind CTO Koray Kavukcuoglu are directly involved in the project. Brin emphasized the need to narrow the gap with Anthropic in agent execution and mandated engineers to use internal agent tools to improve Gemini's programming skills.
Google also ranks teams by tracking usage of the programming tool Jetski and organizes AI training to promote full AI integration in development processes. Brin noted that strong programming capabilities are a key foundation for AI self-improvement, potentially automating the workflow of AI research engineers.
