Google DeepMind says Gemini 4 is in early post-training
At the AI Agenda Live summit in the US, Koray Kavukcuoglu, head of Google DeepMind, said the next flagship model Gemini 4 is now in the early post-training stage. Post-training means adjusting a base model to make its behavior more reliable.
Kavukcuoglu hopes Gemini 4 can launch well before the end of the year, saying the team has seen exciting results. Gemini 4 will be Google's first next-gen flagship since the Gemini 3 series launched late last year. Google had said Gemini 3.5 Pro would arrive in June, but it never shipped, and the team shifted focus to the Flash models.
Gemini 4 is currently in safety testing and guardrail development. Google engineers are already using it internally to run the Antigravity AI coding tool. When asked if Google is behind rivals, Kavukcuoglu said he has full confidence in his team.
