Google Discontinues Project Mariner Web Automation Project, Core Tech Integrated into Gemini and AI Mode
Google recently announced the discontinuation of its experimental web automation project Project Mariner, but its core technology has not been abandoned—it has been integrated into core products like Gemini Agent and the search product AI Mode. The project, first launched in December 2024, could perform cross-web multi-step tasks on users' behalf, such as information retrieval and operations, and could handle up to 10 tasks simultaneously.
Currently, the agent capabilities of Project Mariner have been integrated into Gemini Agent (e.g., handling emails, booking hotels) and search AI Mode. Additionally, Google earlier showcased Chrome's new AI feature "auto-browse", which can perform multi-step tasks like flight price queries, seen as a response to competing web agent tools from OpenAI and Perplexity.
