Google employees mock their own AI coding tool, saying it adds more work
According to reports, Google employees are posting a lot of memes on the internal platform Memegen to mock AI tools, especially their own AI coding tool, Jetski. Workers say these tools are not reliable and actually make their jobs harder. CEO Sundar Pichai said 75% of new code is AI-generated, but many employees aren't impressed.
One meme from the I/O conference said: "I/O announced a new way to create garbage content." Another showed a big-headed fish bothering a diver trying to work, mocking the company's push for AI. Employees estimate hundreds to thousands of anti-AI memes have been shared over the past year, especially after new product launches or Jetski failures.
Some workers argue that while AI speeds up writing code, it just shifts the burden to later steps. A programmer might use AI to create 100 tasks, but each still needs human review, taking about the same time as doing it without AI. The pressure to use AI is clashing with Google's traditionally slow and stable engineering culture.
