Google Exec Says AI Won't Kill Jobs, It Will Change Them
James Manyika, a senior vice president at Google, said AI won't destroy the job market anytime soon. He disagrees with the idea that AI will cause mass unemployment. Manyika has a PhD in AI and robotics from Oxford and has studied automation for years.
He pointed to a 2017 McKinsey report that said automation leads to fewer jobs, new jobs, and changes to existing jobs. Those three things are still true today. He thinks the AI industry is making people more worried than they need to be by talking about '50% of jobs disappearing'.
Manyika said AI's biggest impact is changing what jobs look like, not making them go away. Bank tellers and radiologists still have jobs, but their daily work is very different now. He wants people to focus on what AI really does to the job market, not just panic.
