Google Invests $10B in Anthropic, Cooperation-Competition Relationship Draws Attention
Google recently announced a $10 billion investment in Anthropic, with an additional $30 billion possible if performance targets are met, valuing Anthropic at $350 billion. The investment was accelerated by the popularity of Claude Code, and Google will provide 5 gigawatts of computing power support—an extension of their earlier partnership with Broadcom.
The two parties have a subtle relationship: they are partners (Anthropic is a key customer for Google's chips and cloud services) yet competitors in the AI race, both aiming to build human-like AI tools. Google is concerned about its position in the AI programming market dominated by Anthropic. Founded by ex-Google AI researchers, Anthropic may IPO as early as October; Google previously invested about $3 billion and provided many TPU chips.
