Google Launches WeatherNext 3 for High-Res Hourly Forecasts
Google DeepMind and Research have launched WeatherNext 3, a new global weather model claimed to be the most advanced and accurate. It learns directly from real-time satellite data and can generate high-resolution forecasts every hour worldwide.
WeatherNext 3 offers 5-kilometer resolution for key surface variables like temperature and humidity, while wind speed is at 25 kilometers. Trained with sparse station data, it accounts for local terrain, benefiting regions like Latin America, Africa, and Asia-Pacific, which previously lacked high-precision forecasts due to cost.
The model also supports renewable energy by predicting wind speeds at 100 meters height, aiding wind farm output, and providing cloud and solar radiation data for solar plants. Available now, it powers Google Search, Gemini, Maps, and Earth Engine, giving billions access to more accurate weather info.
