Google's Antigravity platform speeds up antibiotic discovery
Antibiotic resistance keeps getting worse, and the world urgently needs new antibiotics. But drug development has long been slow and complicated. Google's Antigravity AI platform is now helping to speed things up.
The platform gives scientists a smart workbench that pulls scattered database searches into one session. With its ProtNLM model, researchers can scan millions of unstudied proteins in the UniProt database and predict their functions straight from amino acid sequences. They have already found a new antimicrobial peptide candidate that may fight germs behind respiratory infections, and lab tests are underway.
Antimicrobial peptides, especially bacteriocins, attack bacteria's basic weak spots, making it hard for germs to resist them. The platform also has a 3D viewer where scientists and AI agents can study protein structures together, greatly lowering the barrier to biology research.
