Google shifts cloud computing power to frontier AI research
Google CEO Sundar Pichai said the company is shifting some computing power from its cloud business to frontier AI research to fully support AI development. He stressed that putting resources into frontier AI is "fundamental" to Google.
Building frontier AI is expensive, needing lots of computing resources and chips that could otherwise be sold at high prices to cloud customers. Pichai said the cloud business can give up short-term revenue at any time because of this computing trade-off.
On the supply side, data centers take two to three years from decision to operation, so expansion has limits. On the demand side, AI agent tasks are surging, making computing power even tighter. Customers trying to lock in computing power for 2027 will face great difficulty.
