Google Signs Agreement with U.S. Department of Defense to Use AI Models for Classified Military Work
Google recently signed an agreement with the U.S. Department of Defense to use its AI models for classified military work, joining tech companies like OpenAI and xAI. The agreement allows the Pentagon to use Google's AI for any legal government purpose, including mission planning and weapon targeting.
In 2025, the DoD signed agreements worth up to $200 million each with top AI labs like Anthropic, OpenAI, and Google. The agreement requires Google to assist in adjusting AI security settings and states that AI shall not be used for domestic mass surveillance or autonomous weapons (including target selection) without proper human supervision.
Google stated it supports both classified and non-classified government projects and follows industry standards; the DoD said it has no intention to use AI for mass surveillance or develop weapons without human intervention, but hopes any legal use of AI is permitted.
