Hacker Hotz Warns: AI Coding Agents Could Be a Costly Trap for Software Development
Famous hacker George Hotz recently warned that AI coding agents could be one of the costliest mistakes in modern software development. Known for hacking the iPhone and PlayStation 3, Hotz now runs self-driving startup Comma.ai.
After six months of testing various models and tools, along with his work on tinygrad, Hotz found that AI coding tools are good for fast prototypes but bad at handling details that determine quality. He worries big organizations rely too much on AI, producing code that looks fine but hides problems. Less skilled developers might miss these flaws, leading to expensive fixes and hidden bugs.
Hotz has shifted from early optimism to skepticism, agreeing with Yann LeCun and Gary Marcus that large language models are just complex statistical systems that mimic coding patterns without real understanding. In contrast, Andrej Karpathy recently changed his mind, now saying AI agents have permanently transformed programming.
