Hitachi Launches a Wooden Data Center That Cuts 20 Tons of CO2
Hitachi has unveiled a new model of its small data center 'Flexible Design Container', using wood for main structures like pillars and beams. It costs less and is faster to build, as wooden structures draw attention amid growing concerns over data center energy use and carbon emissions.
The product has a modular design and can be placed on factory lots without a large power supply. Wood is lighter and easier to handle than reinforced concrete, fitting prefab construction, and is estimated to cut 20 tons of CO2.
The wooden walls, along with green landscaping, blend with city views and make it easier to win support when built near residential areas. It meets the top earthquake-resistance class, can stay in use without repairs after a major quake, lasts over 30 years, and has gas fire suppression and entry management systems.
