IBM India exec: AI talent and IP protection key to India becoming an AI powerhouse
Sandeep Patel, head of IBM India, said India needs to push for collaboration between government, companies, and universities to train AI talent and improve its IP system to become a real AI powerhouse. He noted that over half of India's population is under 30, giving the country a big advantage in the global AI race. Patel said AI can boost productivity but is also challenging India's role as a global outsourcing hub. Currently, only about 30% of India's tech workers have the AI skills companies need. IBM has promised to train 5 million people in AI, cybersecurity, and quantum computing in India by 2030. Patel also stressed that stronger IP protection is key for India to become an innovation center. Companies need to know their IP developed in India will be protected and valuable globally. IBM is also expanding to smaller Indian cities, with its Kochi office growing to nearly 4,000 people in just two years.
