iPod Creator Tony Fadell on Why AI Gadgets Failed: They Solved No Real Need
Tony Fadell, known as the father of the iPod, spoke at MIT's first Future Fest in the US. He showed three first-gen AI devices: Rabbit R1, Humane AI Pin and Limitless Pendant, and said their makers once asked him for advice, but he turned them all down. Fadell believes these devices failed because they met no real need. Geeks may find them fun, but regular users just see cool gadgets that have nothing to do with their lives. Most people have never had a secretary or assistant, so they don't know how to use a robot assistant or build trust with an AI. He also noted that Meta's Muse agent was found to have serious security flaws, saying trust and safety matter most when handing tasks to AI. In his view, only Apple might pull this off, as it owns all the hardware and chips but still lacks full AI capabilities.
