Jensen Huang: AI won't kill jobs, just tasks
Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang pushed back against the idea that AI will cause mass job losses, speaking at Y Combinator's Startup School. He said people confuse 'tasks' with 'jobs,' and AI automates the former, not the latter. Using customer service and radiologists as examples, he noted that while AI can handle some tasks, demand for these roles is still growing because productivity boosts unlock more potential needs.
Huang stressed that every job will evolve with AI, and new roles will emerge. In software engineering, AI coding tools let programmers shift from writing code to guiding AI, actually expanding the engineer workforce. He also cited AI legal startup Harvey, claiming demand for paralegals is 'growing at an incredible rate,' though the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics predicts nearly no change in the next decade.
Huang's view contrasts with Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei's prediction that AI could eliminate 50% of junior white-collar jobs. Huang believes AI-driven efficiency will fuel economic growth, creating more jobs, a classic economic logic.
