LA Schools Restrict AI Use, Sparking Fairness Debate
Los Angeles schools have banned generative AI tools on district devices to reduce screen time in classrooms. New York City schools also implemented a similar ban for students up to 8th grade.
The LA school board earlier restricted classroom digital devices due to health concerns and set screen time limits. The education technology director says content and platforms are now more strictly regulated, including AI features.
In 2024, the district planned its own AI platform, but the company behind it collapsed and its founder faced fraud charges. The superintendent resigned after scrutiny. Now, the new policy applies only to district devices, but students can still use AI services on personal devices, raising fairness concerns.
