Lu Chuan: AI-made films are like fast food, the real beauty of movies is 'mistakes'
Director Lu Chuan shared his thoughts on AI and filmmaking at a China-US business and AI forum in New York. He said AI-made images are precise and beautiful, quickly bridging the gap between newbies and experts, but they feel like 'fast food,' missing the unexpected beauty of art. Lu believes the best part of movies is 'mistakes'—the chaos on set and actors' spontaneous performances. These unique flaws are what make art special, and AI might erase them. Still, he's using AI to prepare five movies at once. AI has taken over concept design, storyboarding, and some editing, cutting down costs. He noted that over 95% of short films and ads are now made with AI. Earlier, Lu's company Yuan Dongli teamed up with AI firm MiniMax to create AI-powered anime projects and plans to use AI more in future movies and TV shows.
