Meta and Apple Team Up to Run Muse Spark Open on Mac Studio
Meta and Apple, long-time rivals in business, privacy, regulation, and product ecosystems, have joined hands in a rare technical collaboration around running AI models locally, drawing wide attention. Meta's open-weight model Muse Spark Open has 816 billion total parameters, with 42 billion active ones, and supports a 1 million token context window. It targets complex tasks like coding, agent work, multi-step reasoning, and software engineering. The demo ran the model locally on two Mac Studios with 512GB unified memory, powered by the Apple M5 Ultra chip and the MLX framework. Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg and Apple's John Ternus both confirmed the partnership on social media, saying Mac Studio keeps pushing the limits of on-device AI. The setup isn't cheap though. The 256GB Mac Studio already costs over $10,000, and the 512GB version is expected to launch later this month.
