Meta ditches fruit codenames for its AI models
According to Business Insider, Meta has decided internally to stop using fruit names as codenames for its AI models. The change is mainly about brand positioning, as the company feels fruit names don't match its big AI ambitions.
Meta's latest frontier AI model, Wonder Full, had the internal codename "Watermelon." Its earlier language and image models were called "Avocado" and "Mango." CEO Mark Zuckerberg and AI chief Alexandr Wang even joked on a podcast that the company had run out of fruit names.
Meta isn't the only company using grocery items for AI names. OpenAI once called a model "Garlic," and Google launched an image tool called "Nano Banana." As AI models get stronger, bold names like Anthropic's Mythos and OpenAI's Astra are becoming the trend.
