Meta hits Google Gemini limit due to computing power shortage
According to the Financial Times, Meta asked Google for more computing power to run its Gemini AI model than Google could provide. Google has now limited Meta's access to Gemini. Around March this year, Google's parent company Alphabet told Meta it couldn't meet the demand for Gemini computing resources, causing delays in several Meta AI projects.
Other Google customers were also affected, but Meta, with its massive needs, was hit hardest. Meta has asked employees to save on AI tokens. Despite tech companies spending billions on chips and data centers, they still can't get enough computing power to keep up with growing AI demand.
In the first quarter ending March, Google Cloud revenue hit $20 billion. Google CEO Sundar Pichai said the computing power shortage is holding back cloud growth and nearly doubled its backlog orders from the previous quarter.
