Meta's Manus Acquisition Case Escalates: China's Regulators Punish Involved Personnel, May Restrict Executives' Exit
Meta's $2 billion acquisition of AI startup Manus has entered an upgraded review phase. Reports indicate China's regulatory authorities are taking punitive actions against involved personnel, possibly including restricting exit for some Manus executives. The case, launched by the Ministry of Commerce on January 8 for evaluation, has now moved to the punishment stage.
Founded in Beijing in 2022, Manus moved its headquarters to Singapore in June 2025 and was acquired by Meta in December. China's key concerns: its core AI tech was developed in China, so selling to a U.S. firm after relocating requires a tech export license; it also involves cross-border data compliance and overseas investment approval issues. Meta previously confirmed Manus would close its China operations.
