Meta's Next AI Model Watermelon Matches GPT-5.5 in Benchmarks

Meta has made significant progress in the AI model race. Wang Tao, head of its super intelligence business, told employees that the next-gen model Watermelon has matched OpenAI's flagship GPT-5.5 in benchmarks, though specific tests weren't disclosed. Watermelon is still training and uses much more computing power than its predecessor Avocado.

Wang Tao also posted on X that Muse Spark will soon get an update, greatly improving its coding and agent abilities, aiming to close the gap with competitors. When asked when Meta would release a coding model matching Anthropic's Claude Opus, he replied, "Soon. You'll like what we have next."

Meta plans to spend $125 billion to $145 billion this year on chips, data centers, and other infrastructure. Zuckerberg is pushing hard for AI leadership, offering top talent hundreds of millions of dollars each.
