Meta scales back employee data tracking after backlash
Meta is cutting back a plan to collect employee mouse movements and keystrokes for AI training after strong pushback from workers. The company said in a memo that staff can now pause data collection for up to 30 minutes or opt out entirely.
The tracking software was meant to be installed on US office computers to train an AI assistant for workplace tasks. Employees complained the tool used too much data, raised home internet bills, and sparked privacy concerns. Meta has made adjustments to reduce battery drain.
The move also faces regulatory risks in Europe, where data collection by tech firms is under legal scrutiny. Meta says it still trusts its privacy safeguards but has heard workers' worries.
