Micron CEO: AI Changes Memory Industry Cycles, Demand to Keep Growing
Micron's CEO Sanjay Mehrotra says AI has completely changed the memory industry's cycle pattern. He says AI systems need more memory and high-performance memory, so memory's value and logic have changed. Micron is building a huge semiconductor base in Boise, Idaho, with two chip plants, each about the size of 10 football fields. They plan to start production by mid-2027.
Mehrotra says memory used to go through cycles: demand rises, companies make more, supply exceeds demand, prices drop. But AI is creating longer-lasting demand, not just from data centers but also from self-driving cars, robots, and AI gadgets in the coming years. He admits Micron can't make enough memory right now, as data center customers want 50% more than Micron can supply.
