Micron Develops Vertically Stacked GDDR: Prototype Expected in 2027 to Fill Memory Gap
Micron is developing a new vertically stacked GDDR product, with a prototype expected to be released as early as 2027. It aims to carve a new path between standard GDDR and HBM. Although GDDR is less popular than HBM in AI memory technology, it performs well in graphics GPUs and holds a certain share in the AI XPU memory market.
Nvidia's RTX PRO professional graphics cards and some AI ASIC projects use GDDR, and the shelved Rubin CPX project also planned to equip GDDR. As AI inference demand grows, various caches and memories have the opportunity to play unique roles. Vertically stacked GDDR, with lower cost and larger capacity, is expected to become the focus of memory manufacturers' technology iteration competition.
