Microsoft and OpenAI sued by US newspapers for using articles to train AI
Microsoft and OpenAI are being sued by local media groups in the US. Publishers led by Emmerich Newspapers say the two tech giants used tens of thousands of their copyrighted articles to train AI models without permission.
The plaintiffs claim Microsoft and OpenAI made billions of dollars from this content, while publishers got nothing. The lawsuit also says the two companies got around paywalls and other restrictions, breaking copyright laws and the DMCA.
Emmerich Newspapers is a large private newspaper group based in Mississippi, also serving readers in Louisiana and Arkansas. Other plaintiffs include Ojai Media and several Coopwood media outlets. They are seeking damages and want the court to order the removal of infraining training data from the models.
