Microsoft GitHub Copilot to Switch to AI Credits Pay-as-you-go on June 1, Base Subscription Prices Unchanged
Microsoft's GitHub Copilot will switch from a fixed-quota subscription model to a pay-as-you-go model using AI Credits starting June 1, 2026. The "Premium Request" count will be removed; instead, each subscription will get monthly GitHub AI Credits, and paid users can purchase additional credits. Usage is calculated based on token consumption (input, output, and cache), with rates following each model's public API pricing.
GitHub explains Copilot has evolved from an editor tool to an agent platform capable of long, multi-step autonomous coding sessions, making the old billing method unsustainable. Pay-as-you-go maintains service reliability and reduces restrictions on heavy users. Base prices stay: Pro ($10/month with $10 credits), Pro+ ($39/month with $39 credits), Business ($19/user/month), Enterprise ($39/user/month) all include equivalent credits. Code completion and Next Edit don't consume credits; code review needs credits plus GitHub Actions time.
