Microsoft Launches MAI-Image-2.7, Now World's No.2 Image Editing Model

Microsoft has released its new MAI-Image-2.7-Preview image editing model. Microsoft AI head Mustafa Suleyman said the model now ranks second in the world for image editing, behind only OpenAI's GPT Image 2.5 and ahead of products from Google, Meta and others.

The model works by taking an image plus text instructions and returning an edited version. Text-to-image is not available yet. It can change styles, adjust lighting, edit text in pictures, restore old photos, and handle complex edits that need to understand objects and light.

Microsoft says the new model beats its previous version in all 10 test cases and 7 types of edits. Its style and scene editing leads the next-best model by 24 Elo points, and it scored 1,193 Elo for second place on the Artificial Analysis leaderboard.

Users can try it on Arena, Artificial Analysis and MAI Playground. It is still a preview version — no API or pricing has been announced, and the model weights are not open, so it cannot be self-hosted.
