Microsoft May Shelve 2030 Clean Energy Commitment, AI Data Center Energy Consumption Is A Key Factor
Microsoft is evaluating whether to delay or abandon its 2030 clean energy target, which requires 100% hourly renewable energy coverage for all electricity consumption (the 100/100/0 plan). Insiders say the huge energy consumption of data centers in the AI era has changed enterprises' judgment on the feasibility of climate commitments.
Internal discussions at Microsoft are still ongoing, and no final decision has been made yet. A company spokesperson said it is still maintaining its annual electricity matching target but did not respond to the hourly matching commitment. Rising AI costs have led to budget cuts in multiple departments, including teams responsible for carbon footprint, making clean energy projects subject to stricter reviews.
In addition, tech firms like Meta and Google have seen increased emissions due to AI business expansion. Microsoft's financial report shows it adds 1 gigawatt of data center capacity every three months, with AI and cloud expansion being key reasons for emission growth.
