Nigeria investigates Meta, Alphabet and other tech giants
Nigeria's competition watchdog FCCPC has launched an investigation into big tech companies like Meta, Alphabet, and X, as well as some generative AI platforms. The probe focuses on whether these companies are abusing their market power and engaging in anti-competitive practices.
The investigation follows a petition from Nigerian media groups, who say these digital platforms threaten the sustainability of the country's news ecosystem. They specifically accuse tech firms of using copyrighted news content to train AI models without permission, and of denying news publishers fair revenue-sharing deals.
President Bola Tinubu ordered the FCCPC to look into whether tech companies are harming local media. The outcome could change how these platforms operate in Nigeria.
