Nobel winner warns AI won't boost productivity like computers did
Nobel Prize-winning economist Christopher Pissarides says AI won't bring Western economies back to a time of fast productivity growth. He points out that in the US and UK, up to 40 percent of jobs like nursing and hotel work won't be affected much by AI. So far, there's little sign AI has boosted overall productivity.
Pissarides questions claims by Jensen Huang of Nvidia and Sam Altman of OpenAI that AI will deeply change jobs. He predicts up to 40 percent of UK jobs won't see productivity gains from AI. While AI might help some, it won't match the computer boom of the 1980s and 1990s. He believes the era of fast productivity growth may be "gone forever."
