NVIDIA Releases Jetson Memory Optimization Guide: Quantizing Qwen3 Models Saves Up to 10GB Memory
NVIDIA released a memory optimization guide for Jetson platforms, addressing memory constraints on edge devices through multi-layer optimizations. At the basic software layer, disabling the graphical desktop frees up 865MB, and closing unnecessary network services saves 32MB. For the Jetson Orin series, adjusting the Carveout reserved area recovers about 68MB of physical memory, while kernel-level optimizations reduce unnecessary reservations.
In the inference pipeline, switching from container to bare-metal deployment saves 70MB, and migrating from Python to C++ frees up another 84MB. Disabling visualization components like Tiler and OSD in the DeepStream framework and using FakeSink saves an additional 258MB. Model quantization has significant effects: quantizing Qwen3 8B from FP16 to W4A16 saves about 10GB, and Qwen34B from BF16 to INT4 saves about 5.6GB.
In a real case, the Reachy Mini robot uses 4-bit quantization to run the Cosmos-Reason2-2B visual language model on the Jetson Orin Nano 8GB device, collaborating with voice modules to achieve cloud-free edge-side multi-modal AI applications.
