OpenAI Accused of Not Crediting Earlier Math Work
OpenAI released math research from its AI model Astra, but several mathematicians accused it of academic misconduct for not properly citing existing work. The model made breakthroughs in areas like high-dimensional sphere packing and quantum game theory, with a 249-page paper. Yeshiva University mathematician Steven Miller said Astra's argument on sphere packing in 1000+ dimensions was actually from his 2016 paper with co-authors. Another result on the Soficity problem in group theory was said to combine ideas from 2016 and 2019 papers. OpenAI said it stands by the correctness and plans a small update this week. Cambridge mathematician Francesco Fournier-Facio stressed that OpenAI must follow the same academic standards as humans.
