OpenAI Adjusts Stargate AI Infrastructure Plan: More Reliance on Leased Computing Power, Reduces Self-Built Scale
OpenAI recently adjusted its Stargate AI infrastructure construction plan, shifting to more reliance on leased computing power to meet demand and reducing the scale of self-built capacity. This change means the company will achieve its computing power goals through a series of large bilateral transactions.
Specifically, OpenAI will still obtain computing resources from Nscale's original "Stargate·Norway" data center, but via an indirect route: Nscale → Microsoft → OpenAI. Meanwhile, Microsoft is supporting companies affected by the plan change, including taking over the second phase of Crusoe's Abilene campus in Texas, USA, which was originally the expansion project for Stargate's first site.
