OpenAI Blocks ChatGPT Accounts Linked to Cambodia Scam Network
OpenAI recently announced it has taken down a scam network in Cambodia that used ChatGPT for investment, romance, and gambling fraud. The case came to light through a tip from WhatsApp, with scammers operating in organized groups using fake identities and various narratives to deceive victims.
OpenAI observed that these users also generated content related to human trafficking and forced criminal activities, consistent with public reports. As a result, the company banned a set of coordinated ChatGPT accounts, likely operated from Cambodia, specifically in the Poipet area of Banteay Meanchey province.
The network used ChatGPT to create fake identities, translate scam messages, and produce promotional content, as well as draft internal communications. Scammers built trust with victims through fake personas, luring them into fake investment schemes involving cryptocurrency or gold. OpenAI has since banned the accounts and shared information with industry partners, but the total financial losses remain unclear, with some victims losing thousands of dollars.
