OpenAI Calls for US-Led Global AI Standards

Concerns about the potential dangers of advanced AI are growing. OpenAI published a blog post calling on the US to lead other countries in setting common standards for frontier AI.

OpenAI said ensuring safe AI development requires international technical standards, focusing on which AI model incidents must be reported, how countries can work together on AI development, and how to improve access to the computing power needed to build such technology. Countries should cooperate to create compatible domestic and international standards to govern the most advanced AI models.

OpenAI also called for standards on AI's growing ability to work autonomously, saying fully autonomous recursive self-improvement should not proceed until safety can be ensured. Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei recently warned that once this process starts, it could create a self-reinforcing feedback loop that eventually lets AI systems improve faster than humans can control.
