OpenAI CEO's AI parenting tip sparks debate
Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, recently shared on X what he called a "cool use case" for ChatGPT: linking family calendars to summarize kids' interests and generate a morning podcast about soccer games, birthdays, and news. Altman said the idea came from someone else. As a new dad, he has often mentioned ChatGPT's help with parenting, like looking up baby development stages.
But the suggestion sparked heated debate. Alex Hirsch, creator of "Gravity Falls," replied, "Why not just talk to your kid?" His reply got about 10 times more likes than Altman's post. OpenAI president Greg Brockman also chimed in, saying people value human connections and want AI to enhance, not replace, them.
Supporters say AI saves time and reduces parenting stress. Hally Peck, a mother of two, told Business Insider that AI helps her manage schedules and family tasks, calling time her most precious resource. Altman also predicted his child will have abilities far beyond today's people thanks to AI. Alexandr Wang, a Meta AI executive, even suggested waiting for brain-computer interfaces before having kids, so they can adapt to superintelligent systems early.
