OpenAI Codex Comes to Chromatic Handheld with Game Studio Plugin
At its 2026 Developer Day event in the United States, OpenAI announced a partnership with ModRetro to bring its AI agent tool Codex to the Chromatic retro handheld, launching a dedicated plugin called Game Studio. The Chromatic looks and feels like a Game Boy Color, with a custom LCD and aluminum body. It supports original cartridges as well as user-made games.
Game Studio includes a built-in Chromatic emulator. Users can describe what kind of game they want in plain language, and Codex helps generate the program. Developers can test games on their computer and then stream them to the real device.
Once a game is finished, users can write it onto a Chromatic cartridge. A demo showed that the Chromatic can run user-made games with blank cartridges.
