OpenAI Codex Launches Chrome Extension to Streamline Browser Tasks Like Testing and Debugging

OpenAI has launched the Codex for Chrome extension for Google Chrome, helping users handle daily browser operations. The extension can test web apps, read context across multiple tabs, and call browser DevTools, without taking over the entire browser—users still retain control over pages and tabs.

The team found most common workflows occur in browsers, and traditional plugins or APIs struggle with tasks relying on real-time page states, interactive elements, and multi-tab info. Codex now has over 4 million weekly active users, an 8-fold increase from the start of the year, and the browser extension further expands its use cases.
