OpenAI Codex to Launch iPhone App, Shifting from Coding Tool to General Productivity Assistant
OpenAI is planning to expand its AI coding tool Codex to mobile, launching a companion iPhone app. Positioned as a remote control for the Mac desktop version, this marks Codex's shift from an agentic coding tool to a general productivity tool. The Mac version of Codex has added a work type selection prompt covering 10 fields like engineering and finance, and the system will adjust the interface based on user choices.
Unlike the existing mobile ChatGPT, this Codex iPhone app focuses on the "development agent command center" function. Developers can monitor background automated tasks (such as code refactoring and batch testing) and receive real-time feedback via their phones. It also deeply integrates version control systems, allowing users to approve modification suggestions submitted by agents via voice or touch during commutes or free time.
