OpenAI DevDay Draws Large Protests Over AI Data Centers

The 2026 OpenAI DevDay opened in San Francisco, USA, facing large protests outside the venue. More than 15 organizations joined forces for the rally, including Bay Resistance, Tech Workers Coalition, and SEIU. The protest took place outside the Fort Mason event entrance, with signs reading "People Over AI" and protesters wearing cardboard robot costumes waving sickle props.

Protesters focused on the environmental impact of data centers and the concentration of power in the AI industry. One flyer demanded that AI data centers be set up at a "safe distance" of more than 100 miles (about 160.9 km) from residential areas.
