OpenAI fixes Codex credit drain bug
OpenAI has fixed a bug in its coding agent Codex that caused some users to burn through credits too fast. The tool's background tasks used more computing power than expected, speeding up credit consumption. Over the weekend, several users reported the issue. OpenAI set up an emergency team on Sunday to investigate and reset all user credit limits.
Codex engineering lead Thibault Sotiux explained that features like automated code review and helper agents were running too often, repeating tasks, or retrying endlessly after errors. The dashboard also showed background operations that didn't actually cost credits. All fixes are live now, with better monitoring to catch such issues early.
Coding is one of the most popular paid AI uses, so billing errors can drive users away. A software engineer on a $200 plan said his weekly credits were used up in two days. Some developers have stopped using Codex. This shows AI companies are cutting credit limits or ending unlimited plans to manage computing costs.
