OpenAI Forms Emergency Team to Fix Codex Credit Draining Issue
OpenAI has set up an emergency team to fix a bug where users' Codex coding tool credits were running out too fast. Many users on X said their credits drained way quicker than usual for the same tasks, with one paying $200 per month using up a week's worth in just one day.
OpenAI's status page says the issue came from an anti-abuse system that wrongly limited some accounts. Engineering lead Thibault Sotioux said they've reset all user limits and are checking logs to find the root cause.
As AI tools get more popular, computing resources are under pressure. Many companies are cutting user limits, like Anthropic did with Claude in March. This issue follows a recent OpenAI outage, showing how much coders now rely on AI, while services move away from unlimited usage.
