OpenAI gives 100,000 researchers free access to premium ChatGPT features

OpenAI launched the ChatGPT for Academic Researchers program, giving 100,000 scientists free access to premium ChatGPT features. It starts with 10,000 users at select universities and plans to add 90,000 more researchers later. Participants get a version with higher usage limits and a bigger context window, similar to the Pro GPT-5.6 Sol model, designed for complex queries and long tasks. Invited scientists can bring in four colleagues from the same institution. OpenAI also plans an expanded deep research feature that gathers info from hundreds of websites and can be customized to pull from scientific journals.
