OpenAI Launches Agent Plugins to Make AI Plugins Work Across Apps
On August 7, 2025, OpenAI launched Agent Plugins, a standard for packaging AI agent plugins. It solves the problem of plugins not working across different apps. The standard is open and vendor-neutral, with version 1.0.0 now available.
Agent Plugins defines a common folder structure for plugins, covering shared formats like Agent Skills and MCP Servers. This lets compatible apps find and load plugins the same way. Developers no longer need to repackage for each app—just one package works everywhere.
The standard still lets each app control distribution, installation, permissions, and user experience. It only sets a base for interoperability. OpenAI hopes this will make the AI plugin ecosystem simpler and boost cross-app use of agent technology.
