OpenAI Launches Codex Chronicle Feature: Screen Recording Builds Memory Bank, No Need to Repeat Context
OpenAI has launched the Chronicle feature for its Codex app. This feature builds a memory bank via screen recording, allowing Codex to use these memories as context for subsequent tasks—so users don’t need to repeatedly explain what they’re referring to, the tools they’re using, or ongoing projects.
Currently available as an optional preview for ChatGPT Pro subscribers on macOS (excluding the EU, UK, and Switzerland), users can enable it by turning on "Memory" and "Chronicle" in Codex’s "Personalization" settings, then granting screen recording and accessibility permissions.
Chronicle runs in the background, organizing recordings into Markdown summaries stored locally. Temporary files are auto-deleted after 6 hours. OpenAI notes it consumes credits quickly, carries prompt injection risks, and memory content is unencrypted on the device.
