OpenAI Launches 'Patch the Planet' to Boost Open Source Security
OpenAI has launched a new program called 'Patch the Planet' to help open-source communities improve cybersecurity and fix code vulnerabilities. The name is a twist on the movie 'Hackers' line 'Hack the Planet'. OpenAI is teaming up with security firm Trail of Bits, whose engineers will work directly with open-source maintainers to find and fix risks.
OpenAI says Trail of Bits engineers will first check the detected issues, then help write patches and test cases, and set up automated workflows. OpenAI's own Codex Security tools will also help. The goal is to make life easier for overworked open-source maintainers, not harder.
Open-source projects are the foundation of commercial software, but their scattered nature leads to many security flaws. The Log4j bug a few years ago caused a global crisis. Some worry AI could be used to create attack programs, but OpenAI is using it to boost defenses instead. This move also responds to rival Anthropic and meets a real need in the open-source world.
