OpenAI: Over 1 billion people use ChatGPT, work is the main driver
OpenAI's latest report shows that over 1 billion people worldwide use ChatGPT, and its use is shifting from a "question-answering tool" to a "task tool." In work settings, users are more likely to use ChatGPT to produce content or perform tasks, such as writing, coding, editing, and analysis, with over twice the likelihood compared to non-work settings. In non-work settings, usage remains mostly for asking questions and seeking information.
Multimedia is the fastest-growing use case, with the share of multimedia-related messages rising to 7.8% since the release of ChatGPT Images 2.0 in April 2026, though it still lags behind leading categories like practical guidance, writing, and information search. In terms of age, users aged 35 and above have increased their message share in almost all countries and regions, with a global average increase of 5 percentage points over the past year. France and Czechia saw gains of more than 10 percentage points.
